Themistoklis Kontos and colleagues at the University of the Aegean, Lesvos, Greece, used the Analytic Hierarchy process in combination with GIS methods to establish the relative suitability of areas for landfilling (given the necessity of using this method).

Every small area of island as determined by statistical clustering techniques
Detailed scales from 0 (most unsuitable) to 10 (most suitable) developed for each attribute and assigned to each area of island using GIS methods. In our illustrative gallery Area A has high Ratings on hydrological and technical/economic attributes but low ones on environmental and social ones, Area B has the reverse set of ratings, while Area C has a random set of ratings
'Formed by the authors' and emphasised to be one possible set of judgements. In slide 1, using the Kontos study weightings Area B emerges as the most suitable of these three. A slightly greater weight to Wind Orientation gives the verdict to Area A (slide 2) while Area C could only succeed (slide 3) if a massive weight is assigned to Land cover (or Wind orientation)
Output is map of Lesvos with each area coded to represent Suitability score.

The purpose of presenting an Annalisa version of a study conducted using another MCDA method (such as the Analytic Hierarchy Process) is to summarise and present the analysis in a simple and attractive one-screen format for a large audience - and to permit the interested viewer to download the .alt file and interact with the Weightings and Ratings to determine the effect of changes on the Scores. Alternatively the .alt file may be used as a 'starter' for a new analysis. No opinion is expressed or implied in regard to the merits of the study on any criterion
