Medical specialties have more applicants than the number of places available and usually allocate them on the basis of rating the candidates on a relevant set of attributes or criteria - typically on the basis of interviews as well as other evidence. Given the selection process is spread out over time a benchmark rating is usually established, with subsequent 'tweaking' to achieve the desired target, depending on the number who achieve the benchmark. In our example we suggest 70% has been set as the benchmark

  • Clinical skills, including Vigilance and Situational Awareness and Problem Solving
  • Organisation and Planning Skills including Handling of Pressure
  • Managing others and Team Involvement
  • Communication Skills
  • Professional Integrity
  • Empathy and Sensitivity
  • Research
  • Commitment to specialty. learning and development

Hypothetical Ratings
Equal in slide 1, varied in slide 2
Slide 1 shows that candidates 1, 3 and 5 reach the benchmark with equally weighted criteria. In slide 2 we see that giving greater weight to the interpersonal criteria and less to research and commitment brings Candidate 4 up to the mark
